Of Course He Has A Tail

garyEveryone knows Curious George has a tail; he’s a monkey, after all. I distinctly remember that book where he is hanging in the tree torturing that hat salesman dude.

Right? Nope – wrong! There is a book called Hats For Sale but it’s not even a Curious George book. George doesn’t have a tail but most everyone at first recall thinks he does.

Turns out we are all wrong about a lot of things we remember to be facts or thought had happened. What happened? Was it always that way or did some mysterious circumstance change the world as we know it? Freaky.

Recently, some of the creative staff at Optima was talking about the Mandela Effect (instead of working). This effect is about alternate memories or alternate realities. If you buy into the conspiracy theorists, there are some wacked-out ideas on why we all seem to remember statements like “Mirror Mirror on the Wall”, when in fact it’s “Magic Mirror on the Wall”. Another real popular misnomer is Berenstain Bears or Berenstein Bears… know which one is correct? What’s really weird is when the incorrect belief is identical across a majority. These common misbeliefs are benign but there are also some historical events that many people have completely wrong. Stuff like the date of the tragic Challenger explosion and even the original location of New Zealand relative to Australia. Mind-blowing stuff, for sure. There is even a website around this effect. If you go there, don’t read the theories section.

mandelaWe started talking about how people get something in their heads and it just becomes ingrained as a hard fact. Conversation quickly moved from children’s books to the common beliefs folks have about Optima. It’s the rare first visit by a customer that we don’t hear statements like:

  • I didn’t know you build custom Lightboxes – Yep. In fact, we are UL certified and work with many different extrusion suppliers. We even build boxes that will be hard-wired in their final location. LED light boxes for SEG (silicone edge graphics) are built everyday.
  • We thought you were the pop-up guys… selling graphics on imported banner stands – We do still provide high-quality portable pop-ups and other portable displays like banner stands but the bulk of our business revolves around custom builds, fabrication and printing all them gigantic display graphics. Oh, and yes we do sell table throws! Lots and lots of them.
  • The shop is bigger than imagined – This one is my favorite! It is true – we used to be little, but we are all grown up now… given that we started out of a little house and today are in our state-of-the-art facility with a remote warehouse. But we are still a small shop at heart. We are printing, designing, building, fabricating and assembling in STL, MO – 3 shifts all week. If you are an Exhibit Reseller, know that Optima takes on everything you throw at us while meeting your timeline. We had to get big to keep up with your growing business!

The Trade Show World is Not for the Weak… Don’t face it alone.

Some famous statements we often remember incorrectly but uniformly incorrect – kind of spooky.

If you build it they will come
If you build it HE will come

Houston we have a problem
Houston WE’VE HAD a problem

What is the Mandela Effect?
The Mandela Effect refers to apparently real, alternate memories of a history that doesn’t match the documented history in this reality.

Thanks Mel! I wonder if there are any Mandela Effects and in search of Big Foot Crossovers? Seems like a good match

Occasionally someone will say to me, “What about the Bigfoot sighting in Florida or Arkansas or Ohio?” And, I have to tactfully tell them that Bigfoot is only in the Pacific Northwest. All sightings outside the Pacific NW are clearly fake. Sigh.

Very good post Gary. Also great to see the old building – I was walking through it in my mind. Many good times and good people in those memories.

The pic of the old place was taken last week on the same day as the pic of the new place.
Still looks the same but is now connected to a huge building next door. (cropped out).
