The 6 Questions with François Frezouls

François has been a gracious friend for many years, helping me learn about business and how to treat people. He has helped me and Optima develop products that our customers love. When we decided to support the Bemidji students and create the internship François didn’t hesitate to expand the program!

He is at times a practical dreamer, creative and hardworking – never distracted or deflated by details. Always inspiring and overwhelmingly positive, when you work with François, it’s not work at all…

I Asked François, The 6 Questions

1. Tradeshow industry lore is that we all just fell into tradeshow and once you’re in you never leave. For many people that is certainly true. For others, they leave but a part of them remains.  How did you get into the business?

AuthorFF – By accident … because at that time I was ready to do just about anything but in a selective and organized way.

And who inspired you to grow into your Tradeshow career?

– I was mainly inspired by my clients whom I listened to carefully in order to provide them with the best solution, doing my best at finding appropriate solutions to their needs. This was the daily challenge that motivated me.

2. What would you be if you were not in Tradeshow?

FF – I would be a wine maker… or a farmer…

3. Without considering the customers you visit, focusing only on the location, what is your favorite city to hang out in for business travel and why?

FF – No doubt about it, my favorite city to hang out in is Chicago.

Author4. What experience do you recall as a nightmare when it happened but can sit back and laugh about it now?

– It was in St Paul, Minnesota. It was my first presentation in English and I was working for 3M in those days… I was so uncomfortable with my English oral skills … but at the end of the presentation the American audience was so impressed with the project that they forgot my poor English.

5. Do you have any hobbies? How does your hobby influence your industry work and vice versa?

FF – I love Art and design and I feel that I’ve found Art helpful in finding the extra details that made my product a little bit different from everybody else’s.

6. If you could send a message to yourself day one of your tradeshow career what advice would you give yourself?

FF -“Enjoy and don’t be afraid.”

Merci Beaucoup François!

What is The 6 Questions?

A clever friend of mine, we’ll call him Harold Mintz, just to use a name, once hipped me to a trick. Harold explained that whenever he is at a party and the conversation is slow he loosens things up with a question. “What did you go to school for and what are you doing now.” Everybody has a story – Brilliant!

Piggybacking on big H’s idea, I’m running a new blog series titled The 6 Questions. I have some of the icons of our industry, folks you all know, lined up and ready to reveal the how, why and whatever. Our tradeshow industry is packed full of some of the most interesting people. They each have a unique story to share. Thanks for reading!   ~ g
