Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness

On the tradeshow floor the correct lighting can make the difference between an average exhibit and an award winning one. We are lucky enough to have a knowledgeable longtime industry partner to help with our lighting needs. A man who needs no introduction and no lighting to make him look good shares with us his thoughts on the subject that is his passion. So pick up your pens and take notes as we enter the world of my friend Rob Cohen of Display Supply and Lighting.

Blogger PhotoIf your space is not well lit, then you won’t be noticed!

Think about it. Walk around on a trade show floor or in a retail store. The well lit spaces are the ones with constant traffic. If you can attract the traffic to your booth space, you can then go through the process of determining if an attendee is a qualified buyer for what you have to offer. You have a short period of time to get noticed. At best you have 20 seconds to attract the attention of a passer-by as they meander along the crowded exhibit floor. Grab their attention by having a well lit space! Good, effective lighting is not a single solution proposition. There is not a perfect light for every situation. If you share your goals and budget, reasonable solutions can usually be found. Just throwing a light somewhere is usually not the solution. Work with an exhibit design professional. If they know what they are doing, they will consult with a lighting designer who is familiar with the exhibit industry and understand the ins and outs of what it takes to set something up in an exhibit hall and how to make it work from a cost effective standpoint.Blogger PhotoBlogger Photo That lighting designer will likely not charge for their services, so long as the products you use come through them.

Be fair and share your budget.
This will avoid people wasting a lot of time chasing the stars when an economical budget is required. Also make sure you share the number of shows that the property will be used at in a given year. This will also allow lighting designers to understand the purchase vs. rental option.
Plan ahead.
It may sound easy, but the more you plan ahead and commit to something, the easier and less expensive it will be to make your dream a reality. Waiting to the last minute can blow a budget when you add expedited shipping into an equation.
For more information on how to properly light an exhibit space contact your exhibit professional and make sure that they get the right talented people involved in the process.
